Mechanic and automotive sponsorship visas
Workshops and dealerships sponsor more trades than most people realise. Automotive occupations are well defined, which helps, but the Department looks closely at whether a role is genuinely a qualified tradesperson’s role and whether the worker’s overseas experience translates.
Where it goes wrong
The sponsor problems we see most in automotive.
Genuine position
A small workshop nominating its first mechanic will be asked why the role is needed and how the business supports it. The answer is in the numbers and the workload, and it has to be shown, not asserted.
Overseas experience
Mechanics trained on different vehicle fleets and standards need their experience mapped to the Australian occupation and, where required, assessed.
Apprentice or tradesperson?
A worker who is still completing training cannot be nominated as a qualified mechanic. Timing matters.
For employers: If your workshop or dealership has a mechanic worth keeping, we set out the steps and the costs before you commit.
