Electrician and plumber sponsorship visas
Electrical and plumbing are licensed trades. A visa lets you be in Australia and work for your sponsor; a state or territory licence lets you actually do the work. The two have different rules, different assessors and different timelines, and they have to be sequenced.
Where it goes wrong
The sponsor problems we see most in electrical and plumbing.
Licence before work
A sponsored electrician or plumber usually cannot work unsupervised until the state licence is issued, and the licence pathway for overseas-trained trades runs through a skills assessment and often a gap-training or provisional licence stage. Employers need to plan for that period.
Skills assessment is not optional
For these occupations the offshore skills assessment pathway is well defined and must be done in the right order. A nomination lodged before the assessment is a nomination waiting for a problem.
Duties drift
An electrician doing mostly data cabling, or a plumber doing mostly maintenance, can drift away from the occupation nominated. The nomination should describe what the role really is.
For employers: If you run an electrical or plumbing business, we map the visa and the licence side by side so you know when your new tradie can be on the tools.
For workers: If you are a licensed electrician or plumber overseas with an Australian offer, your skills assessment is the first thing we look at.
