Construction and building sponsorship visas

Construction is the industry where sponsorship most often stalls on paperwork, not people. The worker is good; the nomination describes a role that doesn’t match the occupation, or the business structure confuses the Department. We fix that before lodgement.

Where it goes wrong

The sponsor problems we see most in construction and building.

Labourer or tradesperson?

A worker doing skilled work but employed and described as a labourer can’t be nominated as a tradesperson. Duties, pay and supervision have to line up with the occupation from day one.

Sub-contracting and ABNs

Sponsorship needs an employment relationship with the sponsor. Workers engaged through their own ABN, labour hire or a chain of sub-contractors need the arrangement restructured, carefully, before nomination.

Business turnover and group structures

Builders often run several entities. The Department has to be shown that the nominating entity is the real employer and that the role is genuine within it.

Experience without paperwork

Years on site, no certificate, references from businesses that have since closed. Common, and workable with the right evidence strategy and, where needed, recognition of prior learning.

For employers: If you run a building business and have a worker you want to keep, or one overseas you want to bring in, the first conversation is about your structure and the role, not the worker.

For workers: If a builder has offered to sponsor you, bring your payslips, references and any licences or tickets to the SolvePlan. We work out whether your experience matches a listed occupation.
